World’s top gourmet stops for gastronauts

The travel guide Lonely Plant has assembled a list of 1,000 of the top places around the world to indulge in gastronomical delights.

If your idea of a luxus getaway is eating your way through a Turkish Bazaar or hunting down the best truffles in Tuscany. You may want to pick up a copy of Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Sights (£15.99/$25) released on September 27.

Until then here are some stops that made the list:

– Gelateria di Piazza, San Gimignano, Italy for gelato
– House of Master Belgian Chocolate-Makers, Brussels, Belgium for chocolate
– Darjeeling, India for tea
– Maison Mercier, Epernay, France, the champagne capital of the world
– San Miniato National, White Truffle Market, San Miniato, Italy for truffles
– Spice Bazaar, Istanbul, Turkey for their mounds of spices
– Roquefort caves of France for cheese
– La Grande Epicerie, part of the oldest department store in Paris, Le Bon Marché for everything yummy

And gastronauts don’t worry there is plenty for you including the Donghuamen night market in Beijing, a sensory feast, or rather “a kaleidoscopic food zoo of all the Chinese food you could wish to try,” – like candied insects and scorpions on a stick.
