This week\u2019s post has little if anything to do with the world of hedge funds. I apologize to those who were looking forward to commentary on the news of the industry. I\u2019m digressing into the world of politics and sports, both worthy of commentary. Next week, I\u2019ll come back to hedge funds and investment management.<\/p>\n
The news coming out of Washington and Berlin and Paris, etc., is all about the NSA\u2019s listening programs; this and the problems with the Obama-care website are getting all the ink.<\/p>\n
I am not sure what if anything more needs to be written about these two items except for this: In both cases I would have liked President Obama to follow President Truman and say, \u201cThe buck stop here.\u201d Instead, the President tried to duck both issues and once again showed the American people and the world how he is unable to take responsibility for the actions of his administration.<\/p>\n
I think this sends the wrong message, not only here but to the world. Leaders need to be accountable for their actions. This is not what is happening in the Executive Branch right now.<\/p>\n
The other issue is the talking heads who are allegedly calling the World Series games on Fox. Both Tim McCarver and Joe Buck are horrible. Not only is their play-by-play awful to listen to, but they clearly hate the Red Sox and are incapable of providing unbiased commentary about the team, its players or its management.<\/p>\n
I am glad McCarver — a former Cardinals catcher — is retiring in just a few short days and hope that Fox will remove Buck from anything to do with baseball. Fox should take a lesson from the Red Sox playbook, find a new set of announcers for next year\u2019s playoffs, and move their coverage from worst to first.<\/p>\n
